A guest post by super blogger Jessica Robson. Connecting industries, blending networks and bringing a voice to local good-makers brings a number of people together. While the venue, the artists, the art and the imminent party that will develop are all be reason enough to purchase a ticket to get your slice of the fun, finding out the ‘WHY submiT?’ of some of the events’ volunteers, project team members and VanCity guests is a great way to connect to this unique event as it continues to develop, year on year, and engages our local community in coming out to support the arts, culture and education scene. In looking internally to the event, this years’ Project Manager, Bettina Khan’s why is centered around unique communities coming together to create mass amounts of possibility. She sees the event itself as a conduit for people from all walks of life to connect with others and other communities outside their regular ‘day to day’. Bettina’s experience in working with the submiT team and participating in past events shed light on how so many that come out to support the event are strongly connected through their love for creating access. Here in Vancouver, through [...]

1) Whats your source of inspiration? I’m inspired by funny pet names. I’m inspired by mistakes. I’m inspired by hand drawn letters. I’m inspired by logos on cardboard boxes. I’m inspired by Dad jokes. I’m inspired by the fact that I don’t understand how fax machines turn sounds into pictures. I’m inspired by Curtis Mayfield. I’m happy that the Cathy comic strip is finally over. I’m inspired by small versions of things. I’m inspired by good use of space. I’m inspired by stupid ideas that make money. I’m inspired by slang words. I’m inspired by Hawaiian Folk songs. I’m inspired by friends. I’m inspired by shinny things. I’m also really into pan seared Brussels Sprouts these days. 2) How do you recharge your creative batteries? The best way to get out of creative ruts I find is to relax, breath and find the space that exists when you don’t overthink – the space that exists when you’re just present in the moment without to much discursive brain movement. Also hanging out with other creative people is a great motivator or checking out the work of other creative people or making up a pointless project to complete or listing to music [...]

We’re super psyched to have the wonderful Leah Gregg creating a t-shirt for us this year. Visit her twitter to find out more and read our interview with Leah below. 1) Whats your source of inspiration? For me, it’s everywhere. From the icy vistas of the North Shore mountains to a great shot on Instagram to something ridiculous on Reddit to the light shimmering perfectly on Science World’s spacey dome on a sunny day. 2) How do you recharge your creative batteries? I run and bike the seawall. The absolute best way to clear your head, blow off steam and get refreshed. 3) Who is an influential artist/mentor you have or would like to meet? Douglas Coupland. And I did have the honour to meet him at an event and I totally geeked out, jumbled my words and went all red in the face – literally. It was the best. 4) Describe your perfect day in Vancouver. It includes the following in no particular order: A JJ Bean latte, photographing one of our city’s beautiful neighbourhoods, riding my bike, holding my girlfriend’s hand, and enjoying the view perched on one of our city’s benches by the seawall. post by: Cariann Burger [...]

We’re super excited to have Jon Shaw as one of our 10 artists for this years submiT vancouver event! 1) Whats your source of inspiration? In the day I am a graphic designer, and in the evenings my studio is located amongst constant change/demolition/reconstruction in the DTES. I pull various elements from design and what I see when I walk to the studio from work (urban decay, textures, etc) and combine them into new approaches to my pieces. 2) How do you recharge your creative batteries? I make art as much as possible..but I’m very active too. I challenge myself to a personal-best time on a 5k run, or bring a pot of tea to the water to sit, chill and stare. 3) Who is an influential artist/mentor you have or would like to meet? I did a teaching residency earlier this year at an art-focused high school in South Dunbar area. I taught the senior students who were preparing for their journies to art school. One day I want to come across some amazing work in a gallery, or publication, etc and find out it was one of them. I want them to show me up. 4) Describe your [...]

1) Whats your source of inspiration? Old photos, my memories, and colors {ie a wall of paint tubes, or an embroidery thread display… I have to buy something whenever I see either of those things}. Oh, and I have a thing for the 1980s. 2) How do you recharge your creative batteries? Actually, I just spent an amazing afternoon with two artists that I really admire, Jessica Bell and Sarah Gee. We talked about artist blocks, selling, not selling… and then we drank coffee, and ate pastries. I left completely inspired and totally recharged! Now, if those girls are busy, a trip to the art supply store would be my backup {so many colors!} 3) Who is an influential artist/mentor you have or would like to meet? Oh boy, I have a long list. I recently met American painter, Jennifer Davis. She’s amazing! As for who I’d like to meet: Wayne White, Martha Rich, Alyson Fox, and if he was still alive, I’d really like to meet Andy Warhol. 4) Describe your perfect day in Vancouver. It depends on the season, but if we’re talking about fall… brunch in gastown; wandering through the market on granville island (getting ingredients for [...]

1) Whats your source of inspiration? There’s many things that make me feel inspired, music being one of the most important. I also get inspiration from seeing Mexican art, handcrafts, colours, and shapes that are made in different regions of the country. And lastly, I get inspired by art, illustration and design blogs. All of this helps me generate new ideas 2) How do you recharge your creative batteries? Everytime I listen to a new song, or meet new people or places I feel like creating something. Whenever there’s something new happening in my life I feel the urge to create and paint. 3) Who is an influential artist/mentor you have or would like to meet? I would like to meet Jaime Hayon and Julie Moon. I admire them and love how their pieces are full of detail and high quality, and how they make non-conventional art. I love it when an artists takes risks and creates what they want to create without thinking of what people might think about their work. I believe this is when the most original work is created. What I always look for in art is that feeling of “wow, I’ve never seen anything like [...]

Passion projects arise when we aren’t anticipating them. and, as many things do, they arise exactly when they are supposed to – when people are ready to take a commitment to a cause to another level, when a need for insight and information is so very relevant or when someone decides it is time to build awareness – and steps up to bring a voice to a person or a project. So is the story of submiT – an innovative night that connects the Vancouver arts and culture scene to the development of sustainable education in Ethiopia. It’s all in the name of building a self sufficient country – with an education system free of foreign aid. Lacey Norton, founder of submiT, has been volunteering with imagine1day – a local not-for profit with a focus on sustainable education in Ethiopia – since the organization began. She has strongly rooted beliefs in education being the key to empowerment and that access to education is as important as our other basic needs. In 2009 when the i1d team decided that they were going to do a trip to Ethiopia, Lacey knew she needed to be on the team that hit the ground [...]

1) Whats your source of inspiration? I love music. I am loving M.I.A. and the new Feist and Drake as of late. I also look at some favourite art and design books. I am building my library in my studio. 2) How do you recharge your creative batteries? I have started drawing again. I take time to look at other people’s work or ignite my creative process by aligning myself with other creative people and spending time in relationship and conversation with them. 3) Who is an influential artist/mentor you have or would like to meet? I would like to meet local Vancouverite Martha Sturdy. One of my idols is Kelly Wearstler and I would love to have lunch with her someday and collaborate on a project. 4) Describe your perfect day in Vancouver. Spending time with my kids at a park in the sun and then jumping in the ocean. Sending them to their grandparents for the night and having a romantic dinner with my husband. A couple bottles of wine, good conversation and that would be perfection!!!
We had a short and sweet interview with Ben Skinner about his creative process. For more of Ben’s work visit his personal website here. 1) Whats your source of inspiration? It’s different every time really. It truly would form an endless list of sources that include many facets of daily life and my own interaction with the world, like product design, advertising, signage, overheard conversations, people, animals, the archaic, the absurd and the magical. 2) How do you recharge your creative batteries? Nature. Getting out of the city and my own head for a while. 3) Who is an influential artist/mentor you have or would like to meet? I’d love to meet Daniel Eatock, Martin Creed, Mark Dion, Nina Katchadourian, Olafur Eliasson, Chris Burden, Louis Vuitton’s Visual Creative Director Faye Macleod. 4)Describe your perfect day in Vancouver.
1) Whats your source of inspiration? There isn’t a single source of inspiration I can point to because ideas can come from all sorts of unexpected places. I get inspired by the process of creating art, the materials I happen to be working with, while talking to peers about what I’m working on, by looking at the work of other artists as a springboard for my own ideas, from a book I’m reading, by studying the natural world, and so much more. 2) How do you recharge your creative batteries? When I’m feeling uninspired I try to switch things up. A change of scene is necessary for a fresh perspective on my work. This can be as simple as leaving the studio and going for a walk, or by getting out of town for travel adventures. I also get a charge out of experimenting with new materials or process because it can inspire ideas and lead to new work. 3) Who is an influential artist/mentor you have or would like to meet? Earlier this year I decided I wanted a more experienced artist to guide me in an informal mentorship relationship. I approached M.A.Tateishi (http://www.matart.ca/), an abstract artist [...]
